Therefore we have prepared a list of the top universities in Bulgaria and their main fields of study.
Founded in 1888, Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the center of the Bulgarian capital Sofia. Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski is the first Bulgarian high academic school establishment. Its history is an embodiment and a continuation of the century-long cultural and educational tradition of the Bulgarian nation. The university has a large variety of available programmes and specializations from which the students can choose - 117 degree courses in humanities and sciences. This 130 years old higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations. International students are welcome to apply for enrollment.
Founded in 1991, New Bulgarian University is a non-profit private higher education institution located in the suburban area of Sofia. NBU is probably one of the most modern universities in the country. Its programs are very friendly for people that are working actively. The programmes are digitized, making distance learning much easier. New Bulgarian University also has a lot of programs, including many arts and marketing B.A.s, and the largest selection of English-language courses in the country. NBU provides a liberal arts education in which acquisition of knowledge and professional skills are integrated with spiritual and ethical values, also providing the opportunity for its students to be a part of the working process of different companies while still finishing their education. Founded in 1945, Technical University - Sofia is a non-profit public higher education institution located in Sofia, with branch campuses in Plovdiv and Sliven. This institution has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic record and grades. The admission rate range is 30-40% making this Bulgarian higher education organization selective and prestigious within Bulgaria. The Technical University of Sofia is the largest educational and scientific complex in Bulgaria in the field of technical and applied science with an institutional accreditation grade of 9.5 (on the scale of 10) for the period 2012 – 2018.

Founded in 1991, American University in Bulgaria is a non-profit private higher education institution located in the town of Blagoevgrad. The town is located south of the capital Sofia and thanks to the two universities is a vivid place with a lot of young people living there. The first American-style, English language, liberal arts educational institution in Eastern Europe, the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) is a unique cooperative venture established with the support of the U.S. and Bulgarian governments, the Open Society Institute, and the University of Maine. Across arts, humanities, business, and technology, AUBG students are free to choose their own areas of study and set their own curriculum. Established in 1920, the University of National and World Economy is a non-profit public higher education institution located in Sofia. UNWE is the coordinating university for Bulgaria in the Central European Initiative for relations between universities. It collaborates with more than 100 universities from all over the world and works with them on joint Master`s degree programmes, scientific research projects, distance learning, students and lecturers exchange. The UNWE has incorporates a credit system providing an opportunity for student mobility between the specialties as well as at other universities in the country and abroad. The UNWE has 8 Faculties: General Economics Faculty, Finance and Accountancy Faculty, Business Faculty, Economics of Infrastructure Faculty, International Economics and Politics Faculty, Management and Administration Faculty, Applied Informatics and Statistics Faculty and Law Faculty.

The Medical University – Sofia is the oldest medical institution of higher education in Bulgaria. Today, the Medical University has four faculties - the Medical, Dental, Pharmaceutical and Public Health Faculties, as well as the Department of Language Learning and Sport. Since its foundation more than 60 000 specialists were instructed at the Medical University – Sofia, 4600 foreign citizens included. The Medical University – Sofia has internationally recognized achievements in cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmic surgery, high tech diagnostics of human diseases, prevention programmes for cardiovascular and inherited diseases, bone-marrow transplantation, development of new compounds of synthetic and natural origin, genetics, etc. For foreign students, the University has a preparation year. It is held at the Center for Language Learning, Physical Education and Sport (CENEWF) of the Medical University - Sofia. The preparatory school year includes language training in Bulgarian and English and training in biology, chemistry, anatomy, and physiology only for the needs of language learning.
Plovdiv University was initially founded in 1961 as a Higher Institute of Learning for Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Today Plovdiv University provides degree-level education to students in more than 60 disciplines encompassing the humanities, social sciences, and the aforesaid subjects. The University of Paisii Hilendarski actively maintains international contacts with almost all European countries, the United States as well as countries in Asia and Africa. It takes part individually or jointly with other European universities in those programs of the European Union, United States, and Switzerland, which fund scientific research.
Established in 1945, University of Ruse "Angel Kanchev" is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the town of Ruse. The town is located in the North-eastern part of the country, on the Danube river which serves as the border between Bulgaria and Romania. There are eight faculties in the structure of the University of Ruse: Agrarian and Industrial Faculty, Faculty of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Faculty of Electrical Engineering Electronics and Automation, Faculty of Transport, Faculty of Business and Management, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Education, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Public Health and Healthcare. There are two Branches of Ruse University in Silistra and Razgrad.
Established in 1961, Medical University-Varna is a non-profit public higher education institution located in Varna. The Medical University of Varna is a high-tech university and has more than half a century of history and traditions. The classical models of teaching at the university are well combined with the latest technologies. The university offers to its students modern environment with unlimited opportunities for their development – high-tech labs and training premises, a library with electronic reading rooms and access to the best world information databases. There is an English program for international students in the specialties of Medicine and Dental Medicine.
The South-West University is a state institution that offers training in Bulgarian and English in 71 Bachelor's, 100 Master's and 74 specialized Ph.D. programmes. With its 38-years history, the South-West University "Neophyte Rilsky" has subjugated a leading position in the scientific and educational space both in Bulgaria and Eastern Europe. The South-West University provides training in different scientific fields for about 14 000 students of whom 700 are international students coming from various countries such as Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Serbia, Albania, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, Japan, Pakistan, Yemen etc.
