The World-Famous Kazanlak Tomb in the "Valley of the Thracian Kings", Bulgaria (VIDEO AND PHOTOS)

The world-famous Kazanlak tomb attracts the interest of people from all over the world who want to see the Thracian funeral architecture from the end of the 5th and the beginning of the 3rd century BC.

Situated in the "Valley of the Thracian Kings" in Bulgaria, the tomb has a duplicate on a 1:1 scale, which presents the architecture and artwork, and it is open for visitors while the original is under a special protection regime. It was discovered in 1944 and to keep it in a good condition, a life-sized replica was made.

The tomb is made up of a narrow corridor which leads to a round burial chamber. It is decorated with murals depicting the funeral feast of a Thracian couple. The couple is seated by a table that is covered with fruits while their servants present them with gifts.

A second, smaller, frieze found above the feast, pictures chariots being pulled by horses. Here, you can see how developed the funerary art was. These paintings are Bulgaria’s best-preserved artistic masterpieces from the Hellenistic period.

The Thracian tomb of Kazanlak is a masterpiece of the Thracian creative spirit. This monument is one of a kind in the world, so do not miss the chance to visit it. The exceptionally well-preserved frescos and the original condition of the structure represent a significant stage in the development of Hellenistic funerary art.

According to scientists, in “The Valley of the Thracian Kings” similar to the “The Valley of the Egyptian Pharaohs”, Thracian kings and important representatives of the Thracian aristocracy, have been buried.  By 2012, only 100 mounds out of 1,000 existing ones have been studied.

We also recommend you to visit the Megalith over Buzovgrad, located very close to Kazanlak.
