German-Turkish Citizen Arrested in Bulgaria

A social worker from Bonn was detained in Varna at а request of Turkey. This was reported by the German media “Zeit” this morning. 44-year-old Mehmet Y. was detained at Varna Airport and was taken to a pre-trial detention facility.

The man arrived in Bulgaria for a holiday with his family on Sunday. According to the order issued by the Turkish authorities, he has been wanted for 9 years because of the accusations of supporting Kurdish terrorists. His wife denied the existence of such a warrant.

However, the Bulgarian police showed a “Red Notice“ of Interpol seeking the man who has been a German citizen since 2009. Turkey did not release him from his Turkish citizenship, so he has both German and Turkish passports. The German embassy is in contact with the detainee.

He has worked for the charity organization Caritas in Bonn and cared for minor refugees.
