Bulgarian Socialists Party to Launch a TV Station

The Bulgarian Socialist Party wants to get a license for a television station named “Bulgarian Free Media.” The logo for the TV was already patterned by the socialists last week. The registration papers were sent to the Council for Electronic Media today.

In an interview with Dnevnik in May 2018, BSP’s leader, Kornelia Ninova, stated: “There is a problem with media freedom. Part of the problem is that they are financed by European programs from the government and that makes them dependent on those in power. The stances of BSP are often neglected by the media. That is why I hope that from October 1 the BSP television starts running.”

Further, BSP’s leader stated that the TV station will try to be neutral and uncensored in an attempt to lift Bulgaria from its low position in the World Press Freedom Index. Ninova was quoted as saying: “The motto of our television is “Be Free”. The television will be public. We have the goal of making it interesting and to rely on information and journalism.”

BSP TV is one of Ninova’s promises made during the race for leadership of the party. The station was supposed to launch last year but was postponed due to internal tensions and opposition.
