Bulgaria - One of the Fastest Growing Tourist Destinations in the EU

"For the first 7 months of 2018, over 5.2 million foreign tourists have stayed in Bulgaria, which is nearly 7% growth compared to the same period last year", Tourism Minister Nikolina Angelova commented, opening a working meeting with the control authorities before the end of the season, the Ministry of Tourism reported.

Angelkova presented statistics showing that between June and July 2018, the foreign tourists who have visited Bulgaria are more than 2.8 million, and this is 3.6% growth despite the weather being bad. More than EUR 1.3 billion are the revenues from international tourism for the first half of 2018, which is 9.7% growth compared to the same interval in 2017.

In her words, Bulgaria is becoming a destination with sustainable progress. Meanwhile, the preparations for summer 2019 have started and the minister hopes that it will be even more successful, as tour operators like “Thomas Cook” and “TUI” consider starting flights to Bulgaria in April 2019, which will prolong the season in the country.

Angelkova also commented on Eurostat's data on the overnight stays of foreigners, according to which in May 2018 Bulgaria ranks second among all EU countries and in June there are over 3.1 million overnights of foreigners, thanks to which Bulgaria is ahead of the Czech Republic, Belgium, Poland, Norway, etc. According to the preliminary data for the period 2015-2017, Bulgaria is the first to increase the number of overnight stays in the accommodation places among all the Community countries.

Angelkova also shared the good news that there has been a large decline in thefts, also overall crime is extremely low, and all signs of polluted beaches have been checked and resolved.
