7000 in Vitro Children Born in Bulgaria in the Last 9 Years

The Bulgarian government assisted in the conception of 7000 in vitro children for the last 9 years. The data was revealed during the yearly awards ceremony of the “I Want a Baby” foundation in the Parliament building.

In 2017, 4000 applications for in vitro procedures were filed, which led to 900 births.

The chairwoman of the National Assembly, Tsveta Karayancheva, said: “The government kept its promise to finance the in vitro program. It's hard when in your family there’s nobody to tell you “mom” and “dad.”

During the meeting, many parents that conceived in vitro shared their stories for dealing with reproductive problems and giving birth. Another aspect of assisted conception that’s being developed further is egg donation. Since the program’s start in 2015, 64 out of 70 couples were approved for the procedure, with 9 children being born.
