Bulgarian Children in the Top 4 Ranking for Overweight and Obesity in the EU

Bulgaria is one of the EU countries with the highest percentage of overweight and obesity in early childhood, together with Greece, the Czech Republic, and the UK. This was reported at a press conference by the Bulgarian Society for the Study of Obesity and Related Diseases, BGNES announced.

An average of about 30% of the children in the country are overweight and 13% are obese. Some of the reasons include bad eating habits and sedentary way of life. Children aged 6-9 are usually 25 hours a week in front of a screen, whether it is a TV, a computer, or a smartphone.

As a positive trend, it is noted that in recent years Bulgarian children consume more and more fruits and vegetables, which places Bulgaria in second place in the EU. In addition, there is an improvement in eating habits. Specialists recommend that the youngsters stay for up to 40 minutes in front of a screen, and adolescents - up to 3 hours a day with a mandatory minimum of 10 minutes of rest.

An annual event in Albena under the motto "School of Health - for Children, Teachers, and Parents" is organized under the patronage of the Health Ministry. So far, over the years, the campaign has been attended by 560 parents who are taught the basic principles of the healthy lifestyle, balanced nutrition, and physical activity.
