The new Policy on Mandatory Vehicle Insurance in Bulgaria will become active from January 1, 2018

The new policy on mandatory vehicle insurance prices will come in effect from January 1, 2018. The price will be lower for careful drivers and up to 180% more expensive for drivers who have been fined for traffic violations.

As it was previously reported by EuScoop, the Bulgarian Ministry of Internal Affairs has decided to instantiate dynamic pricing on the mandatory vehicle insurance, in order to stimulate lawful behaviour on Bulgarian roads. Drivers who have not committed any traffic violations in the last few years will receive a 50% discount on the price of their mandatory insurance. Drivers who have been caught speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or have caused traffic accidents may pay up to 180% more for their mandatory vehicle insurance.

The dynamic insurance pricing comes as a much needed measure in order to improve traffic on Bulgarian roads. Over the past few years, Bulgaria has been first on traffic accidents per capita in the EU. The accidents have most often been the product of careless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, deprivation of advantage and driving in the opposite lane on dangerous segments.
