How Many Bulgarians Migrate? No One Knows.

How many Bulgarians live abroad? The truth is - nobody is quite sure. There seems to be a huge gap between data presented by the government and data presented by NGOs. According to the chairman of the parliamentary commission on Bulgarians abroad - Andon Donchev, there are 2.5 million Bulgarians living outside of the country. However, a research conducted by the Open Society suggests otherwise - only 1.2 million Bulgarians live abroad.

Donchev claims that over 750 000 Bulgarians are living in the EU alone. The rest 1.8 million are all over the world. Only last year 9254 people have left the country. At the same time, the Open Society admits that during the last 5 years the average amount of Bulgarians leaving their home country is pretty high - 25 000 per year. However, there is also an average of 21 000 Bulgarians coming back each year. This leaves us with about 4000 people leaving the country on a yearly basis. The report from the Open Society concludes that for the course of 35 years (1981-2016) Bulgaria has lost 1.85 Million people - a lot of them because of the negative birth-rates. The people who left are 1.1 Million the George-Soros-funded NGO claims.
